At Sunshine Mountain Retrievers, our journey began long before our kennel was established. It started with a little girl growing up alongside Golden Retrievers, watching her aunt dedicate her life to raising, training, and loving this incredible breed from 1983 through 2009.

Some of my earliest memories are of Golden Retrievers. I watched firsthand the intelligence, loyalty, and gentle nature that make them one of the most beloved breeds in the world. More importantly, I witnessed the responsibility that comes with breeding and raising dogs the right way. My aunt taught me that breeding was never about producing puppies—it was about preserving a breed, improving future generations, and creating lifelong companions that could positively impact the lives of the families they joined.

When she passed away, she left behind much more than memories. She left behind a passion, a purpose, and a calling that stayed with me for years.

As I grew older, I realized I wanted to continue the work that had inspired me as a child, but I also wanted to make an even greater impact within my community. That dream became Sunshine Mountain Retrievers.

Today, our program is built on a simple belief: every puppy deserves the opportunity to reach its fullest potential, and every family deserves a dog that is thoughtfully matched to their lifestyle, goals, and needs.

Our Commitment to Ethical Breeding

 

We are proud to breed AKC Golden Retrievers with a focus on health, temperament, structure, and purpose.

Every breeding decision we make is intentional. Our dogs undergo comprehensive health testing, including OFA evaluations (Hips, Elbows, Eyes, And Heart) and full panel genetic screening (This includes genetic markers to other breeds for example such as Great Pyrenees and Irish Setters as in the late 1900s this was a common practice to add these breeds in effort to widen the genetics pool in the breed and where later bred out to create more diversity within lines to save goldens as a breed.), and DNA testing to help ensure we are producing healthy, sound puppies for future generations.

We carefully evaluate pedigree, structure, temperament, drive levels, and trainability before selecting a breeding pair. Our goal is not simply to produce beautiful Golden Retrievers—it is to produce dogs capable of excelling as family companions, therapy dogs, service dog prospects, and community ambassadors.

Raising Puppies with Purpose

 

From the moment a litter is born, our puppies are raised inside our home environment where they receive daily interaction, handling, and enrichment.

We incorporate:

• Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)

• Early Scent Introduction (ESI)

• Puppy Culture principles

• Confidence-building exercises

• Socialization exposure

• Age-appropriate problem solving

• Foundation training

Every puppy is treated as an individual. We spend countless hours observing personalities, energy levels, confidence, recovery ability, social engagement, and overall temperament development.

This allows us to make thoughtful recommendations when it comes time for placement.

Supporting Service and Therapy Programs

 

One of the areas closest to our hearts is supporting service dog and therapy dog programs.

We understand that not every puppy is suited for this work. Service and therapy dogs require a unique combination of temperament, stability, resilience, confidence, and willingness to work.

Because of this, we carefully evaluate each puppy throughout development and work closely with families and training organizations to identify candidates most likely to succeed.

Our mission is not simply to place puppies into homes—it is to help create successful partnerships that can positively change lives.

Whether a puppy is destined to become a service dog, therapy dog, facility dog, or beloved family companion, we want to ensure they are given every opportunity to thrive.

Matching the Right Puppy to the Right Family

 

One of the most important parts of our program is our matching process.

We firmly believe that choosing a puppy should be about much more than coat color or gender.

We spend time getting to know our families, learning about their lifestyles, children, activity levels, training goals, and expectations. We then combine that information with our extensive observations of each puppy to help guide the best possible match.

Our goal is simple:

The right puppy, with the right temperament, in the right home.

This thoughtful approach helps create stronger bonds, greater success, and happier outcomes for both our puppies and their families.

We provide ongoing support, guidance, and education throughout the life of every puppy we produce. Whether a family has questions about training, nutrition, development, behavior, or health, we remain available to help.

Many of our puppy families become lifelong friends, and watching our puppies grow into beloved family members, therapy dogs, service dogs, and community companions is one of the greatest rewards of what we do.

It is the continuation of a legacy that began decades ago with my aunt’s love for Golden Retrievers and has grown into a mission dedicated to serving families, strengthening communities, and preserving everything that makes this breed so special.
