Our Story: A Purpose Placed on My Heart

 

Sunshine Mountain Retrievers began with more than a love for Golden Retrievers. It grew from a deeply personal calling to help individuals and families whose lives are touched by disabilities and mental health conditions.

As a little girl, I watched members of my own family navigate challenges that many people could not see or fully understand. Everyday situations could become overwhelming. Changes in routine could create anxiety, unfamiliar environments could feel frightening, and moments of emotional distress could make communication and connection difficult. I also witnessed the comfort, confidence, companionship, and sense of security that properly trained service and therapy dogs could provide.

Those experiences remained with me as I grew older, but my purpose became even more personal approximately 10 years ago when my godson was born. He was later diagnosed with Level 2 autism.

Watching someone I love navigate daily challenges has been both heartbreaking and inspiring. I have seen how sensory overload, difficulty communicating needs, unexpected changes, unfamiliar surroundings, and emotional dysregulation can affect not only the individual but the entire family. I have also witnessed incredible determination, growth, joy, and a unique way of experiencing the world.

These experiences taught me that support can take many forms. For some individuals, a carefully selected and professionally trained service dog may help provide grounding, interrupt certain behaviors, support routines, create personal space, assist during overwhelming moments, or encourage greater confidence and independence. Therapy dogs can also offer comfort, connection, and emotional support within appropriate settings.

Dogs are not a cure, and no puppy can be guaranteed to become a successful service or therapy dog. However, the right dog—with the appropriate temperament, health, professional training, and lifelong commitment—may have a truly meaningful impact.

This mission is so deeply personal to me. Because of childhood trauma, I have lived with PTSD, night terrors, and extreme anxiety, and I understand how exhausting it can be when your own mind and body do not feel at peace. My primary stud, Payson, is also my personal trained deep-pressure therapy dog. During difficult moments, he uses the calming weight and closeness of his body to help ground me, regulate my breathing, and restore a sense of safety. His ability to recognize when I need him and remain beside me has supported me physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Payson has shown me firsthand that a dog’s impact can reach far beyond companionship—he truly helps me through body and soul, and our bond is one of the greatest reasons this work remains so close to my heart.

Why I Chose Ethical Breeding

 

My passion for service and therapy work is what ultimately led me into breeding Golden Retrievers. I did not enter this world simply to produce puppies. I wanted to raise healthy, emotionally stable, thoughtfully matched companions with the potential to make a positive difference in someone’s life.

Golden Retrievers possess so many qualities that first drew me to this mission: their intelligence, gentleness, devotion, trainability, and remarkable ability to connect with people. Whether a puppy eventually becomes a beloved family companion or continues into professional service, therapy, or facility-dog training, every puppy deserves the strongest and most ethical beginning we can provide.

Our program focuses on health, temperament, structure, confidence, resilience, and age-appropriate development. We use Early Neurological Stimulation, Early Scent Introduction, intentional socialization, enrichment, temperament observations, and positive foundational training. We also carefully evaluate each puppy as an individual and work to match families according to temperament, energy level, lifestyle, and goals—not simply appearance or order of deposit.

We will never guarantee that a young puppy will become a service or therapy dog. Instead, we honestly identify potential, communicate our observations, and encourage families pursuing working roles to continue with qualified professional training.

Sharing God’s Gift With Others

I truly believe dogs are one of God’s greatest gifts. They meet us without judgment, remain beside us during difficult moments, and often provide comfort when words are not enough.

Seeing the impact these remarkable animals have had within my own family placed a calling on my heart: to share that gift with others. Sunshine Mountain Retrievers was created from that calling and from the hope that the puppies we raise may bring companionship, confidence, comfort, independence, and unconditional love to the families who need them.

For us, this is much more than breeding. It is an opportunity to serve others, honor the Golden Retriever breed, and help create meaningful lifelong partnerships—one carefully raised and thoughtfully matched puppy at a time.

Our Commitment to Ethical Breeding

 

We are proud to breed AKC Golden Retrievers with a focus on health, temperament, structure, and purpose.

Every breeding decision we make is intentional. Our dogs undergo comprehensive health testing, including OFA evaluations (Hips, Elbows, Eyes, And Heart) and full panel genetic screening (This includes genetic markers to other breeds for example such as Great Pyrenees and Irish Setters as in the late 1900s this was a common practice to add these breeds in effort to widen the genetics pool in the breed and where later bred out to create more diversity within lines to save goldens as a breed.), and DNA testing to help ensure we are producing healthy, sound puppies for future generations.

We carefully evaluate pedigree, structure, temperament, drive levels, and trainability before selecting a breeding pair. Our goal is not simply to produce beautiful Golden Retrievers—it is to produce dogs capable of excelling as family companions, therapy dogs, service dog prospects, and community ambassadors.

Raising Puppies with Purpose

 

From the moment a litter is born, our puppies are raised inside our home environment where they receive daily interaction, handling, and enrichment.

We incorporate:

• Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)

• Early Scent Introduction (ESI)

• Puppy Culture principles

• Confidence-building exercises

• Socialization exposure

• Age-appropriate problem solving

• Foundation training

Every puppy is treated as an individual. We spend countless hours observing personalities, energy levels, confidence, recovery ability, social engagement, and overall temperament development.

This allows us to make thoughtful recommendations when it comes time for placement.

Supporting Service and Therapy Programs

 

One of the areas closest to our hearts is supporting service dog and therapy dog programs.

We understand that not every puppy is suited for this work. Service and therapy dogs require a unique combination of temperament, stability, resilience, confidence, and willingness to work.

Because of this, we carefully evaluate each puppy throughout development and work closely with families and training organizations to identify candidates most likely to succeed.

Our mission is not simply to place puppies into homes—it is to help create successful partnerships that can positively change lives.

Whether a puppy is destined to become a service dog, therapy dog, facility dog, or beloved family companion, we want to ensure they are given every opportunity to thrive.

Matching the Right Puppy to the Right Family

 

One of the most important parts of our program is our matching process.

We firmly believe that choosing a puppy should be about much more than coat color or gender.

We spend time getting to know our families, learning about their lifestyles, children, activity levels, training goals, and expectations. We then combine that information with our extensive observations of each puppy to help guide the best possible match.

Our goal is simple:

The right puppy, with the right temperament, in the right home.

This thoughtful approach helps create stronger bonds, greater success, and happier outcomes for both our puppies and their families.

We provide ongoing support, guidance, and education throughout the life of every puppy we produce. Whether a family has questions about training, nutrition, development, behavior, or health, we remain available to help.

Many of our puppy families become lifelong friends, and watching our puppies grow into beloved family members, therapy dogs, service dogs, and community companions is one of the greatest rewards of what we do.

It is the continuation of a legacy that began decades ago with my aunt’s love for Golden Retrievers and has grown into a mission dedicated to serving families, strengthening communities, and preserving everything that makes this breed so special.
